Arem-arem Recipe, Rice Roll With Meat Filling.

Rice is indeed commonly found on Asian continent, including Indonesia. Apart from being a staple menu that is eaten with vegetables and side dishes. Rice is also processed into various kinds of food that are popular with many people. From sweet to savory there are also, for example Arem-arem.

What do you know about Arem-arem? 

Arem-arem is a food in the form of rice containing vegetables, fried chili sauce, chicken liver, beef or other things wrapped in banana leaves. Arem-arem is popular as a subtitute for breakfast and also a market snack that is popular in Indonesian people. 

This time we will share how to make this dish, follow the step bellow :


Ingredients :


500 g Rice, rinsed, drained

1500 ml Coconut milk, from 1 coconut 

2 bay Leaves

2 tsp Salt

Banana leaves, cut to 20 cm squares and toothpicks 


Filling :


250 g Minced meat
250 ml Coconut milk, from ½ coconut
2 cloves garlic, finely sliced
2 shallots, finely sliced
3 red  chillies, coarsely chopped
1 cm galangal, crushed


Ground spices :


½ Tomato, chopped
2 cm Aromatic ginger
½ cm Salt
1 tsp Sugar



How to make :


1. Put rice in a pan, together with salt and bay leaves. 

2. Pour in coconut milk, so it is 5 cm above rice surface. Pour in some water if necessary. 

3.Cook until rice has absorbed all coconut milk completely, set aside.

 Filling : 

1. Heat 3 tbs oil to saute shallots, garlic, chillies, galangal, and ground spices until fragrant.

2. Add minced meat and stir until changed colour, then pour in coconut milk. 

3. Simmer while stirring occasionally, until stock is fully reduced, the meat is tender and dry.

Finishing :


1. Place 2 tbs rice on a banana leaf and level with the back of spoon. 

2. Add on top 1 tbs filling, level, and then 2 tbs rice. Roll  and secure with toothpocks at the both ends. 

3. Steam for 60-90 minutes until cooked. Leave to cool and set before serving.
